Further to my earlier post, thanks for the replies, will try the factory reset. I presume this is the one detailed on p100 of the manual. Will let you know if it helps. Further to Jerry's comments, the distortion does seem to be related to the main volume setting and is reduced if this is set at around 70-75%.
