Once upon a time, Kenton manufactured the Plugstation which was a 19" Rackmount in 
which you could install Yamaha PLG series expansion cards such as the PLG150-AN:

I don't believe the Plugstation is manufactured any longer, but perhaps you could find one 
second hand on eBay.

As an alternative, you could always buy a Muse Receptor and load up a copy of NI Pro-53 
as the next best thing to a AN1x ;-)

Yamaha did, the AN1r. When the result was ready for production, the 
project was canned.

I'm not familiar with the innards of the AN1x, but a friend of mine has 
one with only half the polyphony, which suggests that there are two DSP 
(digital signal processor) chips on board that take care of the sound.

you'll see some internal pictures of the AN1x. The circuit boards aren't 
very big, so from that point of view, it should work. The one thing you 
might have to worry about is software: what will happen if you remove 
the keyboard?

The reason why I'm mentioning this is because my EX5R (rack), before I 
sold it and got an EX5 (keyboard), had a different ROM. The difference 
between the machines is, apart from the keyboard, 24 voice selection 
buttons and their LEDs, the extra MIDI in/out on the EX5, so maybe it's 
just that, and there would be nothing to worry about with a racked AN1x.

You'd need a 2U rack, probably, to have room for the display (they're 
larger than the visible area) and all knobs and buttons. 19" might even 
be tight to fit everything.

Hello !
i believe that you can encounter some problems with the software because 
of the lack of keyboard . Probably when the power-on self test is 
running , the soft "scans" everything and could "lock" if the keyboard 
is not found . You can try it by disconnecting carefully the keyboard 
and its PCBs and then turn on your synth . If nothing "curious" happens, 
try to set it in "local off" mode and play it (via the MIDI input) with 
another keyboard . If all these points are OK, you can now try to find a 
19' - 2U (or 3U) empty rack and begin to stuff it with the "good" PCBs. 
of the AN1X.
And if not ?
Look for an AN200 expander which is in fact an half AN1X , plus a 
sequencer and sampled drums and percussion sounds . But it's not a rack, 
but a desktop module ....which can be "re-packaged" to fit your needs .
The CS6X expander (if you have one...) can be upgraded with an internal 
cards, in the family of which you can find the soundcard equivalent of 
the AN200.
On both of these suggestions you loose 5 voices of polyphony but you get 
other "bonus" sounds close to an AN1X ones...
