Does anyone on the list use the AN1x effects? I spent some time with
them, but they seem to take away from the sound.

I use them quite a bit, especially a little reverb (on most patches), echo
(usually on Knob 8), and the amp simulator, which I find to be pretty good
for guitar-like sounds. I can't say I've noticed a difference, but then, I
rarely start with a 100% dry mix anymore, dialing in the effect later.

When you say that they "seem to take away from the sound," what do you
mean? Graininess? Loss of high end? Something else?

Bruce,

Thank you for your suggestions. The effects seem to water down the
sound. I'll try just messing with the echo and the reverb. I've had
some luck with some of the plate reverbs for some of the more
metallic sounds. When I try the amp simulator, even when I turn down
everything I get too much distortion. I'll keep trying.

Jimmy,

I find that in addition to turning down the Gain setting in the distortion,
I also have to turn down the (Mixer or VCA) level of the source that I'm
sending to the amp sim, usually to a value of 50 or less. I've also found
that the Tube setting is more realistic than either the Combo or Stack,
IMHO, despite the names.

Hi guys,

Could you give me some advise - recently i purchased esi4000. How do
you think - should i buy a turbo board or (if i don't need
addictional ins and outs) it's better to find something separated
like Electrix MoFX? May be something else. Could you please enlight
me a bit. Thanks.

The FX on the Turbo Board are not very good. Not at all. If you have enoughe outs...(the Calamari or whatever it's called) any good FX unit (like the MoFX you mentioned) or even any half decent FX Unit will give you better FX and much larger creative Scope.

I'm finally getting the handle on the AN1X effects. A little goes a
long way. I'm mostly using chorus (the orchestral chorus) phase
shift, or amp simulation with just a little overdrive. The delays are
nice for giving the sound a little space and the plate reverb gives a
nice metallic feel to the sounds. A bit of feedback in the reverb and
delay is nice for pads.

I bet the folks that wrote the original presets were older with
hearing loss because the all the eq settings boost the high end. I
set all the eqs to zero. So far I've gone through the first 33
presets and only kept 2-Earth, and Wonder. I just tweaked those and
set them up to morph. As soon as I get a decent computer I'll send
you some presets.

Maybe these effects aren't too bad after all.

You can get a nice analog lead with just one oscillator, but there's
not enough volume. Feedback can help, but this can change the sound
of the filter.. The aural exciter really cranks the volume, nice,
rude, and in your face.

I recorded a lead using one of Richy's patches, a female choir patch, then took a free VST plugin that purported to sound like a Marshall stack. A very interesting sound--kind of like a mellotron run through a fuzz box

Also, recording an arpegio and then also having the arpegio run backwards is nice. When turning knobs while recording, I found the noise knob caused the volume to jump reall fast, overdriving the input--not a nice distortion.

There should be a law however about people like me programming digital drum machines to play disco beats.

The AN1X is way too much fun.

I've been using my AN1X with a headphone only for one year and I have to admit that the reverbs do not sound very nice. Pluging it in my VS880EX with a reverb is much more musical. I've also played a bit with the aural exciter to try to compensate the lack of high frequencies on some patches but was not convinced neither. Effect on my MU100R are much better. But the AN1X is so versatile and fun to program and so much fun to play.
