Hi Reggie,

Hmm... let me see, I'd go for a Apple G4 Titanium PowerBook in conjunction
with the MotU 828 FireWire audio interface. ;-)

Here's a few interesting and useful links:
http://www.rme-audio.com/english/techinfo/hdsp/notehare.htm
http://www.rme-audio.com/english/techinfo/hdsp/notetabe.htm
http://www.rme-audio.com/english/techinfo/hdsp/notetune.htm
http://www.rme-audio.com/english/techinfo/hdsp/notebase.htm

There also (used to be?) a laptop comparison guide on the site but I can't
find it for now. It would be definitely worth tracking down though.

Good luck,

Phil

Hello All, My friend Ralph has just come into some money, He wants to
buy a Laptop to produce Audio with. He has around £2000 UKP to spend on
it, So, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on a few
points.

1. He lives in the UK, So, can anyone recommend 'Red submarine', as they
appear to make some good laptops for audio? Or has anyone had any bad
experiences with this shop?

2. If he goes for a 'normal' off the peg Laptop from the High Street,
What sort of things should he look out for? Is there anything in
particular that he should avoid like the plague?

3. What sort of processor should he use in one? Intel PIII, PIV or AMD
Athlon?

4. What should he use to produce the Sound? PCMCIA card? USB Box or
Firewire/MLan? He needs multiple outs on whatever he buys to feed into
his 01v.

5. This one may be daft, but I have never seen anything about Graphics
for Laptops, So what is the consideration here?

Please reply direct to me and not the list if you can help it, I don't
want to clutter the lists :-)

Thanks in advance.
See ya,

Reggie

I agree. I use a thinkpad in my live setup running ShowPlay software serial
output to an MU128. Flawless performances thus far. I like the idea that you
can still get parts and setup software for old thinkpads.

Okay, so by that logic if I see lots of other people on the street wearing

the GAP too?

musicians, who used a Notebook on stage, used a Apple Powerbook, so i
guess this must be a good purchase for portable computer music.

Don´t bother with PC technology. As someone already said, if you go

Errrm, No...

I think the point was that if loads of other musicians use it on stage then
it must be reliable and a good choice. He didn't say you should copy their
T-shirts though.

Erm...yes. You are right, if i follow the logic...;)
What i mean is, that i am dealing with PC´s and it´s flaws now since
those came out, 20 years ago. And i´ve never seen a Notebook operate
without a flaw, neither at presentations, where only Powerpoint ran
on the Notebook, or at musical events, where the musician(s) were
using a PC notebook. Windows is simply not stable enough, and it
won´t any more stable with XP.
Apple computer have their own flaws too, but AFAIK do they operate
more stable, and that a lot of live-musicians use a powerbook should
tell you something about it. Another example, a lot of people in
Germany buy the Volkswagen Golf. For sure they don´t do it, because
it´s a very fancy car, indeed it´s quite ugly, but the Golf is
despite it´s outlook very popular because of it´s quality.
So Reggie´s friend should take a look at a Powerbook, because that´s
a quality product that a lot of musicians already use live. Quod erat
demonstrandum.

Cogito ergo sum?

Confused, as always,

FWIW: I use both Mac and Windows machines here (both on desktop and
notebook). In practice I wouldn't go anywhere near Win9x implementations
anymore. However I find XP to be far more stable than MacOS, plus if
something does go, it generally doesn't take the whole OS with it.
For low latency audio Win2K and XP perform really well.

Can we please not turn this into a Mac vs. Windows war? I didn't think
this was the forum for OS debates.

I know musicians who use Macs successfully on stage. I also know musicians
who use PCs successfully on stage, including yours truly -- at least I did;
I'm not playing MIDI'ed music at the moment. I use a Compaq Armada M700
laptop for MIDI, and for presentations, too. I'm teaching a course on
Sunday called "MIDI and Computerized Music" at a local university, and I
expect the PC will work flawlessly as both the presentation tool and MIDI
controller, as it did last year. I can't really recommend Compaq to most
users -- not because the PC platform in unsuitable for music, but because
Compaq has a long-standing track record of making subtle "improvements" to
the PC software (and sometimes, hardware) to try to make it stand out from
the pack, which is counter to the safety-in-numbers design philosophy of
the PC. If these changes are backed out, a Compaq laptop can work well,
too. For the average user, IBM, who still establishes the standards; Dell,
who follows them; or Sony, who cares deeply about the musical aspects, are
probably better choices.

I designed PCs for a living for eleven years, including
laptops. Historically, one of the big reasons that so many musicians use
Macs is that the IBM-PC side of things refused to take music seriously
until about five years ago. I know: I was a vocal proponent of adding
quality audio and MIDI to the designs as early as 1991-1992, and NO ONE
would take me seriously. This gave Apple a huge edge in terms of defining
musicians' preferences, since Apple recognized the musician-computer
connection early on. This also translated into more musical software
packages for the Mac, which made the platform even more enticing. Windows
has been catching up in the last few years, but let's face it: If you've
been using Macs for ten years, and you know and understand all the quirks
and major applications, why would you want to switch platforms now? That's
a big part of the musical "preference" for Mac computers, which translates
into large numbers of Macs on stage -- but it shouldn't be confused with
reliability.

-BW

Exactly. I've had very weird problems with my AN1x that I could only solve
with a factory reset. Not the foggiest idea what happened. It really
deteriorated over time and that was kind of scary.

Speaking of which, Mac OS X has the lowest audio latency of them all. Linux
with some fancy (and experimental) software does a little better with no
system load, but Mac OS X keeps the same latency under high load, whereas
the others all get higher latencies.

Software and drivers also seem to be coming to OS X, so this will be
interesting to look at in due time.

I have a PC at the moment, but the thing that attracts me about OS X is its
Unix based kernel.

Hm, it happened to me too a few (seldom) times, that my AN1x froze on
me, while connected to my MIDI-sequencer. But my MicroModular also
froze up a few times also connected to the sequencer...so is it now
the fault of the AN1x and MM the way they handle MIDI, or is it the
sequencer´s fault (RS7000/Cubasis VST 3.7)? Or is it the nature of
MIDI to produce sometimes SYSEX trash-data, that let´s your synth
crash?

I'd visited a local music store this past Monday and the salesperson
took it upon himself to inform me how poorly XP performs with MIDI and
Audio apps?!? Since I've no first hand experience in this area I'm
inclined to take Gary's experiences more seriously and this should go
to show how *silly* this topic can become :-P

I don't doubt that we're all capable of respecting each others

I'm VERY excited about MIDI and Audio under Mac OS X. So much so that
I've started scheming, uh, I meant 'budgeting', yeah that's it -
'budgeting' ;-) for a new G4 to replace my G3 with its sloooow 66 Mhz
system bus. Damn, even a 400 Mhz iMac has 100 Mhz system bus!!! :-#

TC Works http://www.tcworks.de/ has announced a freeware audio editor -
Spark ME - that was to be made available as of today. Very, very cool

I would like to say that XP has been a nice experience for me so far, I
haven't done any heavy work yet, but I have 2 PC's 1 intel, 1 AMD, both
running 98 and XP dualboots, so we'll see how they both fare over the
next few months.

Sorry for starting the thread Jon :-)

BTW. He is also looking at a Sony VAIO as that got a good write up on
RME, and they come in a little bit cheaper than the Red submarine. I
think that it is a really hard decision for anyone to make, Especially
as he is going to spend 2 or 3 times the amount of money for a similarly
spec'ed PC.

Yeah, that's what I was about to say. Poo-poo on you all for taking this

OS X 10.1.1 rocks. I haven't had anything crash yet. My system has been

I'm downloading SparkME for OS X as I write this. Poo-poo on them for
calling it Spark "ME". Oops, no more mac vs. Win remarks...
