to Jon (list owner)... (do others agree?)

2002-01-24 by RayMaxer

Hi !

I am now moving some maillists to be recieved by my another address to
be checked in the Palm (handheld) in the end and the problem is that
having "[AN1x-list]" (11 symbols) in the beginning of Each message is
making it practically impossible to see the REAL subject of the message
on the Palm (if you also want to sender and date).
My suggestion is to cut the constant subject field of this maillist to
"[AN]" ..
It would be still as easy to understand (or to filter) the e-mails based
on subject field.

Thanks.
Ray.

How about "AN1x:"? That's only 5 chars.

Re: to Jon (list owner)... (do others agree?)

2002-01-24 by jondl_2000

Personally, I don't have a problem with changing the Subject tag
from "[AN1x-list]".

The only potential issue that I can think of is some list members
might be using filters in their email client to sort incoming email
by Subject tag. Changing from [ANI1x-list] to something new
could be mildly disrupting to the unsuspecting ;-)

Does anybody have any objections to adopting a new Subject tag
for list messages?

Any preferences other than "AN1x:"? I prefer "[AN]" but that
doesn't matter one way or the other...whatever the list wants....

regards,

Jon

Jon et al,

I don't have an objection to changing the name, but perhaps [AN] is a mite too generic? I don't have a conflict today, but two-letter acronyms seem to be terribly commonplace, both on and off the web. How about [AN1] or [A1X]? The combination of letters and numbers seems unlikely to be duplicated by almost any other group of people.

-BW

I'd prefer to have no tag at all. They're confusing, and in case of a
mailing list, filtering should always be done by the 'To:' field, not the
subject.

For one thing, the fact that you (Jon) always reply via the web interface,
makes that your replies always end up in a different thread in my mail
reader. (I can't really read my mail if the mails aren't grouped by
threads.) Just look at the subject of this particular mail to see what
happens: Yahoo places the 'Re:' after the '[AN1x-list]', instead of before
it.

Ah, but now we're leaving out our friends with the PLG150AN and the AN200.

No problem here, my software sniffs for the email address, not subject,
and it treats you all like a newsgroup rather than a wad of emails in my
inbox, and once sorted into the relevant lists it then organizes you by
subject:-)

AN1x is fine with me, and anyone smart enough to have created an email rule
can certainly edit it.

BTW - Y'all shouldn't cry too much about the length of the list name now.
Here's one I'm currently subscribed to: [alphajuno-mks50]. Now that's a big
