I read that, you logic guys must be heartbroken :-( And I thought us Steinberg consumers got a raw deal sometimes, but that takes the piggin biscuit. It seems odd for a company to want to ditch 35% of its customer base though, I thought companies were fighting for money at the moment, especially in the audio production software arena? Apple is not interested in PC users, au contraire. When I read "Apple buys Emagic", I knew the next paragraph would read "Windows support will be dropped". - Peter

Now you know how us Opcode Vision users felt a couple years ago when Gibon bought Opcode, then disbanded it a year or so later, leaving hundreds of Vision users in the cold. nick http://www.deepsignalstudios.com http://www.futuresteprecordings.com > > From: "Peter Korsten" <peterk@...> > Date: 2002/07/01 Mon PM 03:31:25 PDT > To: <AN1x-list@yahoogroups.com> > Subject: Re: [AN1x] OT: Apple buys Emagic > > From: "Reggie" <reggie@...> > > > I read that, you logic guys must be heartbroken :-( And I thought us > > Steinberg consumers got a raw deal sometimes, but that takes the piggin > > biscuit. No, on the contary I'm quite excited- finally there will be total intergration into OSX (a VERY exciting UNIX based operating system)- And I don't think that PC development will be dropped- I mean for god's sake- what the hell is Apple doing intergrating M$ Office into OSX????-

Oh come on, the Atari at that point was well discontinued- look at the competition which had been taken over by Steinberg and Emagic. Yes it was a great shame that Gibson dropped development of OMS- but again that was in 68K code- again well out of date and now with firewire/mLan- things will now be looking a lot brighter as Emagic will be able to develop this as an intergral part of the Apple OS.

"Emagic's Windows-based product offerings will be discontinued on September 30, 2002." Pretty much sounds like curtains to me. - Peter FREE!! Peter, Lets wait and see- but the way Apple are going, I wouldn't put it past them that they may be working on a UNIX based OS for PC!!- that would make sense to me- especially as Linux is the No.1 OS in Japan and the whole of Switzerland is pretty much Mac based too. Look, Apple is making money from selling hardware. Nobody really wants to pay for software. At one point there were Mac clones, but Apple killed them off. So an OS-X-for-Intel will never happen, because Apple would kill their main source of income: selling hardware. - Peter FREE!! I also know that the majority of servers in this (in the office enviroment anyway) country are UNIX/ Linux based- connected mainly to PC's running Windows with Office. It would make perfect sense for Apple to incorporate Office (in order to boost sales- especially after the massive Apple campaign run over here in the last year- the software licence for M$ must be enormous! Whatever happens, It's another closed chapter from the great Emagic book.... Tom

Peter, Very fair point, unless Apple returned to the PPC4400 idea perhaps? Tom

What is it 5% Mac users, %95 Windows? It is very nice for Mac users to ba able to communicate with the rest of the world, so having things like Microsoft Word, Windows Media Player, and Outlook for Mac allows for this. When QuickTime was a more popular video format than what is out now, PC users couldn't use it, so, Apple made a QuickTime player for PC. At some point, you have to make more and more stuff compatible.

Other platforms would be compatible, if Microsoft wouldn't make every frigging single protocol and file format proprietary. - Peter (writing this from his Sun Blade system, running Solaris 8, Gnome 1.4, and Netscape 6 for Solaris) FREE!! To be totally honest, despite being a Cubase-turned-Logic user, I never liked either- finding their interfaces "too techie" (despite having just bought NI Reaktor- LOL!!!). I wish Apple and Emagic the best of luck, and equally Steinberg with the PC- but I think these 2 "sequencer-dinosaurs" are a bit long in the tooth now (pardon the pun!). I am more interested in software like Ableton Live!- (I Saw "To Rococco Rot", a couple of nights ago- and they were using this revolutionary bit of software within their bass, drums, toy samplers etc)- I think over the next few years we are going to see some fantastic new products appear. -Personally, I can't wait!!! Shouldn't that be 95% *PC* users?- There are an large amout of Linux users as well-However, I do totally agree with you- I just think that- in my experience with porting over software, I've rarely come across that, done well. I think my only experience of good porting would be Outlook Express and Reason- which are both very stable (Mac G3 here) I just got Reaktor- which incidently, for the Mac is as buggy as hell- which is not good after I paid so much money for it. The architecture of both the PC and Mac are different- I think that's why (I guess) Emagic had to completely re-write the engine for PC Logic (Yes it is a bit odd that they go to those great lengths and then this takeover happens- confused?- so am I). I think where the problem lies, is that- (because of the huge expense involved)- PC software designers rarely rewrite the soft for Mac- and the Mac is forced to behave like a PC- which is fine for the developers, because they now have Mac versions of their software- but it is us who lose out, because the development is forever ongoing. It's a crying shame that BeOS bit the dust- an OS designed for Mac and then redesigned for PC. But (like Linux) it could be used- with amazing speed- on pre-G3 PPC Macs and all Intel PC's. - Perhaps Steinberg should buy up BeOS and get it functioning again- then both parties would be happy?! Tom :-)

Hello Bit of a ballsy idea, a operating system dedicated to run well under sequencer - DROOL.... I would be ready to update my whole PC into a fixed hardware setup in order to get it totally faulty free! -Mikko >It's a crying shame that BeOS bit the dust- an OS designed for Mac and then > >redesigned for PC.
