Re: [AN1x] distortion problems

Re: [AN1x] distortion problems

It somehow seems to me that my AN-1x is distorting at a lower overall
volume that it was 4 years ago too !...
I though it may be just seemed to me...
But it seems like not..
Not sure about the reason and solution, sorry...

Ray.

Try backing up your patches, settings and everything, and do a full
factory reset. While it doesn't seem to make sense, often it does help.

If these patches are duals, you may have a well-known hardware problem,
for which a fix is available (at a price). But try the reset first.

A comment and a question....

If you find that the setting on the volume knob is correlated to the
distortion (less distortion when you twist the knob to the left) ...
it may be that the output amp is giving out. I observed that part of
the timbral difference between the AN200 and AN1X was that the AN1X
overloaded the output amp to yield a smokier warmer sound at high
volume levels. This is correlated to feedback and VCA volume setting
to the degree that these settings raise the overall volume and thus
the overloading of the output amp. I surmise that a regularly
overloaded amp will give out at some point.

Perter:

Whats the price of the fix? What's the process? I have been limping
along, saving my morph patches with a single active scene and then
engaging both scenes during performance to avoid the digital crud
that happens when you boot up the synth with both scenes in memory.

Maybe it's time to get it fixed.

Thanks,

Jerry

Jerry,

Here's a write up from my experience having had the repair
perormed under warranty (this is what Peter refered to):

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AN1x-list/files/Tips%20and%20Tr
icks/tt_audible_pop_click.htm

I recently posted a summarized version of this write up to the list,
what?, like - last month - I think. My AN1x has perfomed without
any further problems since the fix. FWIW, there had been a
couple of other users who'd done the same as me - waaaaaaay
back on the Teklab list - but, afaik nobody (aside from myself)
has posted to *this* list having confirmed the repair was
installed successfully on their unit. Don't know what to make of
that other than to let it speak for itself.

Hope this helps.

Jon

Yeah - I pretty much know and use the thing that Main Volume of An-1x
affects the sound / distortion..
What I was saying is that to me it seems that I have now more distortion at
the same Volume level (wtih the same patch / patch parameters) than before..
Or that i need to have a lower Main Volume setting to have a clear sound
often.. (like to get to about 1-2 o'clock main volume with a patch with <50
feedback and about 110 VCA volume). Do you have it about the same ?

Ray.

Maybe your volume pot is dirty? I don't think it's digital, so this
could be the case.
