Mod wheel

Mod wheel

2003-06-05 by spaceanimals

Usually I use the modwheel to control VCO pitch modulation. This mod
is hard wired to LFO 1. Lately I've been using LFO 1 for sync and fm,
using the s/h waves. This makes the LFO useless for modwheel pitch
modulation. Instead of a nice abrasive sound, I get that weird cheap
sci fi movie computer sound. What else can I modulate to get that
nice buzzy sound? Pulse width mod isn't doing it for me. Filter mod
is hard wired to LFO 1. I think amplitude modulation is also
hardwired to LFO 1.

Is it legal to design a lead sound without any mod wheel parameters?

Legal? Yeah, I do it all the time, if you mean what I think you mean. I do
enjoy mod wheel work, but my main expressive playing is with aftertouch. So I
often have the mod wheel assigned only to Scene morphing on the AN1x. I find
the mod wheel a little loose and wobbly for expressive playing anyway; I'm so
used to the ones on my Kawai and my Korg that I always overshoot when playing
the AN1x.

So far, this Xpander guy has been pretty impressed with that little board. For
the money, it's a fun synth, and I haven't found anything at anywhere near the
price that's as comfortable/compact/powerful as a pure MIDI controller... with
the POSSIBLE exception of the Yamaha V2 (sold in the USA as the DX11), which
is rare as rocking-horse flop these days but usually stupid cheap when you can
find one (kinda like Dig Allen books, but that's another hobby and another
mailing list).

I'm afraid the s/h waveform is going to make most things sound sci-
fi. Here's some ideas ...

1) You could try pulse-width modulation ... letting LFO 2 run it and
controlling the LFO2 rate and the depth from the mod wheel.

2) You could let a FREE EG (sinewave) modulate pitch. Trouble is ...
no control.

3) Or you can let the FreeEG (just draw a S/H shape) modulate the
sync and keep LFO routed to pitch through the mod wheel. You can turn
this effect to some degree by controlling sync PITCH manually.

These days I'm using less LFO mod of pitch. When I do, I often use
oftertouch to let the mod wheel carry the morph duties. When I don't
I do manual vibratos from the ribbon (X). I find the ribbon intuitive
and there's so many things that can be done (vibrato, grace notes,
pitch bend, pitch notch, etc.)

Cheers,

Jerry
