The R&B/Gospel/Rap Wormy Lead and it's cousins

The R&B/Gospel/Rap Wormy Lead and it's cousins

2003-06-04 by Jerry Aiyathurai

There are some sounds that have been intriguing me. I think I heard
the first on some Parliament Funkadelic Cd's and then they became
ubiquitous in the rap and the gospel scenes.

1) One lead sound is best described as wormy and nasally. Lots of
portamento. It's kinda irritating but distinctive.

2) A similar sound is like the above sound but heavily filtered
almost to a sine/triangle wave. It's played like a whistle, 1-2-
octaves above middle C.

In good examples of them, they have a snarl, a bite instead of a
glisten. I am having difficulty getting the same aggression and am
usually to sweet/glisteny in my attempts. I would assume the trick is
some kinda lfo modulation to heighten tension but I'm not sure with.
Any advice on creating these sounds?

Thanks in advance,

Jerry

Bernie Worrell of P Funk used a lot of mod wheel vibrato. Set the mod
wheel to control the VCO 1 and VCO 2 osc pmod (pitch mod not pulse
mod) and set the depth to + 9. Then set LFO 1 to either triangle or
sine and turn the speed up until it sounds right.

Bernie also got a nice cat meowing lead where he used a pitch
envelope. Patch 102 Morphism gets a pretty good yowl if you want some
ideas for settings.

Thanks Jimmy. I'll do that.

How did he use the pitch envelope? Move all oscillators or move one
oscillator agains the other? Or something else?

Cheers,
