This so reminds me of "This is Spinal Tap":

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board,
eleven, eleven, eleven and -
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see,
most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all
the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar.
Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push
over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top
number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [Pause] These go to eleven.

If I remember rightly, from when I used to frequent A1 Music in
Manchester UK in the late 80s, someone did do it.

Can't really remember which company, for sure, but think it was either
Marshall or Laney - their knobs went up to eleven. Think it was only on
one model though - possibly a limited edition or something.

Anyone else remember?

Cheers,

Nigel

You know...I predicted (apparently wrongly) when that movie came out
(what year?) that within a short time some amp maker or other would
actually DO IT...just because of the movie. I'm pretty
dissapointed...well, okay, BITTER actually that no one thought of
it...or have they?

I mean, we got Dweezil Zappa "designing" some amp to look like a cross
between an old RCA Victor radio and a '55 Chrysler....so why wouldn't
they get knobs that go to eleven?

Several companies made knobs that went to 11, either for limited runs or for
continually available products. Marshall definitely did, and I think Laney and
Hiwatt may have too. Peavey promptly made one that went to 12.

The funny thing about this thread is that the original poster may have no idea
what prompted the Spinal Tap reference in the first place.

IIRC, the "goes to 12" has some historical significance. I think some of the '50s amps -- maybe the old Fender Tremolux? -- went to 12. Certainly, some of the old electronic equipment did, which is probably where the first amp control panels and knobs came from.

Yeah, for a minute I thought I had stumbled on the Marshall Plexi Forum or something! ;^)
