Only the AN1x is left...

2004-03-18 by kamilof

Well, so finally I've decided to jump into a virtual studio using
Emagic Logic and to make room in my studio I've just got rid of gear
such as Korg Electribes and the MS2000 but the Yamaha AN1x is not
going anywhere.... it's the only real synth left.

It has been always an inspiring tool and had too many years of
memories attached with it as well. It's now my midi controller inside
the virtual world of Logic, and my secret weapon in almost every song.

Peace (^_^)!

Yeah, the an1x has to be the best little synth I've ever owned. This
one's definitely a keeper for sure.

I use, and love mine. As much time as I have spent on it, I am still primarily a guitarist.
I feel like I have never gotten enough out of mine, not because of any fault in the
An1x but simply because of my own lack of skills in programming it.

I have tried, and I have heard other folks patches that sound great. I mostly want to get
"weird noises" out of it. Weird but musical or rythmic.

I guess it just takes time. It has helped tremendously to have the an1x edit, and better see
what I am tweaking. Still, I wish I could spend a day a week with someone that knew how to
really get the good stuff out of it....or if there were classes somewhere near that they
taught this kind of thing.

  * I took a class in college(1975) called "electronic music lab". We
each got 3hrs. of studio time a week to mess with an Arp 2500
modular. Sometimes trial-and-error,tweaking knobs at random can
produce very good results. I believe the college ( now western
Wa.University) still offers the class and probably still has the same
synth! You may want to check schools in your area. P.S. I will be
posting a bank of 64 of my patches in a few weeks. They are done on a
PLG150AN however, so some of them will not sound correct on the AN1X.
Stay tuned!

For the benefit of those who are recent to AN1x-list - and James too -
there are a number of Links posted here at Yahoo! Groups to various
programming resources:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/AN1x-list/links

In addition to the half dozen programming tutorials which appear in
the latter half of the AN1x Referernce Manual, Yamaha published the
AN1x Voice Set-up Guide

http://www.yamahasynth.com/d_pro/d_an1x/an1xgde.pdf

which demonstrates a few dozen Voices programmed from scratch.

Also, there is the AN Tone Generator Seminar

http://www.digitalmusicworld.com/html/hardware/SynthSeminars/an-
e/index.html

which uses AN200 Editor to demonstrate some Suntractive Synthesis
basics.

And check out Programmng Tips from Future Music Sep '98

http://www.futuremusic.co.uk/fm_mmusic.asp?ID=4800&PageNo=1

Keyboard Magazine offered a free download of Native Instruments
SoundForum softsynth (Mac/Win) which was used for a serious of
programming tutorials written by Peter Gorges of NI:

http://archive.keyboardonline.com/features/soundforum/index.shtml

Unfortunately, Intermusic has shutdown so their excellent tutorial's
are gone :-( So goes the Internet...

Hope this helps,

Check out the Internet Archive (http://www.archive.org/web/web.php). It
seems to have saved most of the tutorials:

So goes the Internet indeed... :)

Maybe someone can mirror these?

Hi guys,

IMHO I think AN1x is the best "analogue" sounding VA even today. It's
a classic and I'll never get rid of my lovely Blue Beast.

BTW: I'm working on my own sound bank for AN1x now and hope post it
here when it will be ready. Stay tuned! :)

If you're into retro "analogue" emulation you should make time to check out an Alesis
ION. If and when Alesis get's past their current q/a issues the ION is a steal.

I still like the AN1x but I've been hooked on the Virus C. Thinking of buying one but
made the mistake of playing the KC - I enjoyed the keyboard feel sooooo much more
to than the AN1x - but the cost :-/ Think I'll be sticking with the module *if* I buy
one.

(that's about the only filter missing in the Ion- it has 20!) I've
sent my Ion in twice for faulty knobs. First time they sent me a new
unit that was worse than the first. Second time they did total
knob/button replacement surgery, and now it is perfect. The question
is how many faulty units are lurking on warehouse shelves. The new
ones shipping seem to have the problems solved.

Glad Alesis was able to work things out to your satisfaction.

I know myself and a couple of acquantances were put off from an ION purchase at
least until they sort things out.

Just do it!!! Actually, you should also check out the Nord Lead 3. I

I'm crazy for the Virus C (and my wife has signed off on the idea too ;-) and I did
check out the NL3 - a/b'ed it with the NL2 and was quite surprised how different they
sound. I've always enjoyed the NL2 sound - and love the UI - but there's not a lot
there in the way of LFO's and Envelopes that the AN1x doesn't offer too. The NL3 is
definitely a step forward in programmability from the NL2 but to my ears the sound is
much more 'metalic' - it seems suited to FM and Ring Mod type sounds. NovaMusik
still offers the Nord MicroMod on blowout for $299 but I honestly can't recall how
similar, or not, to the NL2 it sounds as it's been so long since I played one (must be
about two years now.)

I spent about 30 min. playing a Moog Voyager - what a pleasure that was but beyond
my means I'm afraid. BTW, did anybody catch Bob Moog on 'the Screen Savers' this
past week?

The ION is nice but I've more than enough 'classic' emulations for my tastes - not too
hung up on that to begin with. Glad Alesis is getting past the q/a issues. Did you
know UGO bought an Evolver? Aren't you using one of those?

>

Things are going well - we need to hook up some time soon. Been holding to the
workout routine between Golds and the gym at work - still running at least three or
four times a week, how about you?

Oh, yeah. You know - my main gripe about it - sloppy feel, keys bottom out
with a bang. When I've got a real lead to play I MIDI control the AN with
my 01/W. It's a little clumsy having the left hand on the ribbon/wheels of
the one and the right on the keys of the other... but it works.

Hmm. I'd first ask (as an interviewer) if you thought the sounds were close
enough to the original. Then I'd ask if you thought anything else came
close enough to a minimoog's sound that was priced THOUSANDS of dollars
less. ;-)

I'm so acustomed to the AN1x keys I really didn't expect the KC to make such an
impression but it did. I've too much time and effort wrapped up in the AN1x to sell it
off for just $350-400. I'm kind of hung up on the price difference between the C and
the KC but, you know, it's probably worth it - I just don't want to sell my AN1x to
make up the cost savings.

I enjoyed the Voyager but as I said - it's really not my bag and if I *did* want another
'throwback' synth ;-) I spring for an ION.

Funny you should say that. I just posted this on my website yesterday:
http://www.sayersweb.com/studio/html/Nord_Lead_2_versus_3.html

Several people have asked me to compare them since I now have both
the 2 & 3. There is a bit of a difference in the raw sound, but very
little. If anything the NL3 sounds a bit more dynamic (rounder). But,
they are *very* similar when it comes down to the raw sound.

At first I also thought the NL3 sounded more metallic... but now
think it's because some of the new features are geared toward those
types of sounds. If you don't use those new features it seems to
sound remarkably like the NL2. I plan to do some more comparisons
soon.

The NL3 interface is really fantastic. Well... that does not even go
far enough. It is fan-friggin-tastic.

I had the Nord Micro for a while. I did not connect with it. Mainly
do to the poor hardware interface. I found the overall sound to be a
bit thin. I'm sure there are others will not agree though.

Was this at WMC? I don't want to try the Voyager.... It would suck to
suddenly dislike all of my VAs! I really need ot give the A6 another
try sometime.

Bob Moog was on Screen Savers? Arggghhh! I missed it!! :(
What was he on the show for?

Did he!!! Does not surprise me at all... I do have one, although have
not done much with it other than beta test the PC editor.

Yup, still keeping to the fitness routine, although carrying around a
few of those holiday pounds. Still waiting for the weather to improve
around here!

We should do another DC get-together. At least with Ugo, Ed, you, and
me (and anyone else interested). :)

That argument makes sense - I was pretty hung up on a/b'ing the two side by side at
WMC. Need to give the NL3 a 'do over' before committing to the Virus C.

Aside from the fancy, new illuminated encoders the basic layout seemed to be similar

I thought the 'wow' factor of the the Modular editing software was pretty impressive -
that said, I can't seem to convince myself I want to deal with the headache of running
seperate software either under Classic (see recent thread concerning MIDIBridgeX9) or
on a dedicated SO 9 box. Besides, I'll never get anything done '-) Thta's why I turn a
blind eye to Reaktor ;-)

50th anniversary of MOOG music - he had a Theremin and an accomplished
musicians performed a piece (don't recall the name) and they popped open the
Voyager to take a look see at the analog circuitry and digital control boards - lousy
musical demo of the Voyager though :-/

No fooling. Need a new pair of NBs - my Asics are on their 'last legs' hahaha :-P Took
my kid kite flying at Dulles Town Center yesterday afternoon while the sun and wind
were out - had a blast :-)

I'll email Ed offline and find out what weekend he's off - I'm off again weekend after
next and I plan to take some 'mental health' days off too - need a break from the
routine :-/

Soon to be has-been, I guess. The NL3 replaces the AN1x in my setup.
Know anyone looking for a mint AN1x with several banks of commercial
sounds (on original media)?

I already miss the ribbon controller on the AN1x.

If it were me I'd go for the Virus C first (get the NL3 after that,
LOL!). I think the Virus C offers a broader sound pallet and more
features. Plus Access is one of the best in the industry at
supporting their products.

The control differences are mostly to support the new features of
the NL3.

Yep.... He programmed a good number of the presets on the original
Evolver. Also, you should check out this site for some really wild
Evolver demos -

Do these turn into musical mental health days??

Yeah, their support seems pretty terrific. Not too impressed with the
Access list on Yahoo! Groups but the Ampfea group seems to have it
together. Now that Tax Season is almost done think I'm going to
shoot for May on the Virus C. That should give me time to pay off
the last debt and plan summer vacation stuff - otherwise it will
probably wait until July :-/

From the insider musician's view only. Otherwise a day of testing synths at
a music store looks like musical dementia. Ping me off-list for available

Well.. The longer you have to wait, the more you will appreciate it.

That works, earns you "brownie points" so that you can throw down on
the C sooner!

BTW.... Wut happened to the Soft Synth kick you were on? Don't get
me wrong, I think the C is the right move, but you seemed committed
to the software approach last time we talked about it. :)

Prior to MARS Music going belly up I spent some time playing a KP1
strapped onto the outputs of a Boss DR-202 - what a blast! The KP2
addresses all the shortcoming of the KP1.

And about that browser cache...;-)

I've always felt a mix of both is ideal - that said, there are some
cases where hardware is the best solution and/or vice versa.

I've recently ordered the Logic Pro upgrade which a) includes the
entire suite of Emagic softsynths AND the new Space Designer
Convolution Reverb and b) get me the 'Freeze' function which will eek
out a few more months of usefulness of the old 'G4' desktop Mac. I
was about to spring for their Synth Collection just to get ES2 and
EVOC when this deal came around! I already use EXS24 and ES1 - the
other mini-E* synths are okay for specific roles but they are limited
in scope and function. ES2 will be a panacea until I get off the
fence to replace my MWII (already bought a PPG V.2 on blowout from
Sam Ash but it's more a retro thing.)

I still have Absynth from NI which sounds amazing but I have zero
patience for programming the multi-stage envelopes - which is kind of
the point behind Absynth. You can always hobble together a patch
using cut & paster but it's not as gratifying :-/ This is the same
problem I had with the Korg Wavestation - I had zero patience for
programming Wave Sequences (expect the same of XPhraze but I haven't
tried the demo yet.) So, the synths I've found most interesting are
the ones I hate programming...

Pro53 is okay - I like it a lot - but it is redundant to the AN1x as
far as programming spec's and sound. I got it on blowout dirt
cheap...still use Battery but PhatmaticPro is on my hit list. I was
going to blow it off but then I got the correct AU demo working - and
then I downloaded some of the Bitshift loops expecting them to be
crap but they were REALLY good...

The Novation V-Station plug in is verrrry cool - as is impOSCar. And
have you heard Zebra? I downloaded Chameleon 5000 demo but haven't
installed it yet. To be honest, I enjoyed impOSCar more than the
Evolver! Go figure?

Like a lot of Mac users I'm on the fence waiting for the 2nd
generation of G5 to show up before spending dollars. I've considered
an iBook G4 as an interim solution but that would probably be it for
new gear this year (Virus C + iBook = Dual G5, see where I'm going
with this?) The Virus C mean no new control surface this year
either - but that's okay for now (besides, I want to see how the
Yammmie O1x thingy works out...)

sayer, i hope you don't mind i posted a link to your sound
comparisons of the nord leads at some forums where people were
curious about it. some can hear more difference than myself.

you probably were wondering at the nord group how i knew you were
going to sell the an1x - well, i just recieved my an1x today and have
been lurking over there (and here) for a while.
i like the an1x so far and don't miss the nord quite so much now.

jon: i recently traded a nord lead 2 and a micro-q in towards a virus
c keyboard. absolutely fantastic board, if a little pricey.
don't know what else you've got for boards, but if you can swing it,
i'd try for the board over the tabletop or rack model.
it's quickly becoming my favorite board. i had a tabletop b model for
a while, but much prefer the board. if you just want the 'sound',
the rack XL is a better deal at N*M than the tabletop (assuming you
have a good controller for it).

about the only thing left on my 'to get' list is a nord 3 (unless
they come out with something irresistable next week at the Messe).
i don't like having to program hardware with a computer - softsynths
are a different story.

i ramble - didn't mean to butt in.
BTW - a few of us sent in some AN sounds for the ex5 and ex7 over at
ex5tech. they are being organized now and should be posted over
there soon. don't know if they can be translated into an1x format,
but that might be kind of cool.

In '97 when the AN1x was released I a/b'ed the NL2 and AN1x and settled on the
AN1x. I was in the process of downsizing my set-up to a synth & sampler in
combination with an Audio/MIDI Sequencer - VisionDSP back then. I really liked the
NL2 sound and UI - still do - but felt the AN1x would serve me better as a controller
AND synth - particularly for the cost difference at the time (I paid $800 for the AN1x
prior to the Sam Ash blowout sale and the NL2 was still going for $1200+ back then.)
This scenario has pretty much played out as I expected but now I find most of my
sample manipulation is done on the Mac and I use my HW sampler less often and
there are some quality softsynths to be had low cost that just aren't practical
purchases as hardware :-/

I've tried the Micro-Q a few times and even found a deal on the keybaord version but
I just haven't been able to fall for it - I much preferred the MW II/XT to the Micro-Q.
Sold my MW II when money was tight :-( during the layoff year before last.

Don't want the rack XL - I prefer the tabletop module which would be used with my
AN1x. However, the KC is so nice I just might have to do it instead of the module.
You're the 2nd person to urge me towards the KC.

I've been reading up on some of the low cost hardware controller such as the
Evolution model's and it seems there is some developing aftermarket user support for
these things - specifically, custom Logic Environments support Logic's automation
(apparently this is not covered by the Evolution supplied environments.)

Any true difference is slight at best. The level of the NL2
recordings are a bit higher than the NL3. That may be why people are
hearing a difference.

I've not had a chance to try out any patch comparisons yet.

Congrats on the new AN1x.... Do you notice much difference between it
and the other AN-based synths you have? I've always found the EX5 to
have a slightly warmer/fuller sound than the AN1x, although it only
has half of the voices.

I am really enjoying the NL3 at this point. I was lucky to get it for
under $1k.

Kewl! I have not been to EX5 Tech for a while. MarcE is back,
fantastic!!! And 160 new sounds for the EX. :)

The XTs have come down in price quite a bit.... They do have a unique
sound. I don't regret trading the MKS-80 for the XTk.

I owned a Micro Q for a while and sold it to get the Q rack. I found
there to be a real difference in sthe sound between them. The Micro Q
is not as full or smooth sounding. When I compared the basic sound
quality between the Q and NL3 recently I honestly felt the Q has a
better sound.

Com down in price? Are you refering to eBay prices because you sure as heck can't
find one retail anymore :-( Hope Waldorf puts it all back together someday. And yes,
eBay prices for XT's are within reason.

Last I played a MicroQ KB I had a hard time remebering why I was so impressed when
I auditioned the MicroQ rack? I know I'm giving it short change unfairly...I *think* N*M
still had Q racks but I might be mistaken.

I have to say though - every time I take time to check out a Virus, or Micro Q, or ION I
always come home and fire up the AN1x and start knocking out a few Voices. It's kind
of a benchmark to determine the severity of the G.A.S. affecting me.
