Thanks Jon, I know you told me this a few times... ;-)

I also found this site http://www.yamaha.co.uk/xg/html/midplug/m_mid10.htm#Downloads

I downloaded the lite version as that is what came with the disc. I am just now getting some time to give it a try.

Got it, installed it. I can operate it. I made an attempt to do a receive but it failed. Going to give that try again in the AM. Using win2k and midiman 8x8 with it.

Yep, I now see what everyone means that there is much much more to access via xg on the unit than what you can see at the unit. Clever use of details.

Do you now what is different between the lite and full versions and do you recommend one or the other?

  Dale,

  In the Links section:

  http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/AN1x-list/links

go to the AN1x Online Resources folder and you'll find the links to
both the UK and Japan PLG resources. You'll find the XGWorks update
you need at both sites AND the plug-in modules for XGWOrks at the
Japan site. There are separate updates for both the full XGWorks and
XGWorks Lite - make certain to get the right one (like I need to tell
  you that ;-)

You might want to try several times, first doing a send/recieve of
one voice, then two voices, four voices, and so forth to see if there
is an upper limit to how much USB bandwidth those hefty AN* bulks
dump eat up. Not all USB MIDI Interface/driver combos are up to the

Never used either, not the person to ask :-/ Perhaps somebody else
will chime in...I'd say stick with the Lite version for a couple
weeks to see if you actualy use it for more than just your AN/DX
editor/librarian needs then decide if the upgrade is worth your $80.

will give that a try...
that would be a lot of dumps if I have to go that way... I want to back it up before I destroy the contents with my own changes and or arrangements of items.

Will take you advice on the check it out before buy...

Do you know if there is any difference between the inf files of the dx 200 and an 200, my next steps are to add this into Sonar so I can use them in my tracks there?

What I am thinking is that I can edit the dx 200 inf file I have to make it into a an 200. Name changes, patch changes etc. but I don't know for sure. Though I ask before I start that edit.

I found that I can route the an 200 into the MMV or CS-80 as well. Been experimenting... ;-) Also noted the Extreme into an 200 and an 200 into it was interesting too.

I also have to install the DX 200 items as well. I am being a turtle on these things but I had other stuff consuming my time since I bought them.

Yes, I understand - I wouldn't want all those dumps either. The point I was _trying_ to
make (poorly) is there has been plenty of angst expressed on the list (rightly so, IMO)
regading the transfer of SysEx from AN devices utilitizing USB MID Interfaces (on both
platforms.) I was hoping to impress on you an idea to try if a bulk dump of the entire
memory contents should choke on your hw/sw config.

You knwo, there's an old SW1000K list here at Yahoo! Groups - maybe there's some
discussion there on XGWorks vs. XGWorks Lite...

I just downloaded a PLG150 folder donated to the list by Kevan R. Craft (are you still on
the list? Thanks!) and opened up an INS file in TextEdit and I'm fairly certain it has most of
what you will want ;-)

I'm sorry Dale, you lost me here...what are you talking about? You routed what into what?

Re: [AN1x] Re: xg works

I took the midi out and feed it into the MMV and CS-80 vst's... ;-)

When time warp has the arp for pc ready, I plan on trying that out too.. Mac version is out now..

(My day job has plans on getting rid of the only Mac there and I am going to add that into the studio here soon so I can run a few Mac items I have and want to use ;-) )

well take your advice and check out... ;-)

I also see that I can take the same midi out, edit it on Sonar or Project 5, feed it back to the unit too or use for any of the other number of VST's. Great as if I want to use the units as sequencers or just pattern for fill, it's there. Yep you can see in Sonar, esp in the piano roll, missing 1 note. very easy to work around... well so far all the standard items I ran in and look at show this... when I get it backed up I will try to see how far this really is going to affect me but I can't see it now at all...

"Tone box" wise, that is where I now see I have to spend some time as it is a bit more complicated that I though it was... not in a bad way either... I see a lot of control and possibilities... ;-) up till now, all front panel on the unit play...

I saw a update for the OS. I have not gone so far yet to see which one I do have but what is your thoughts on updating the units?

I got a successful dump to xg lite but when I went to save it, it gave an extension like .xws and only 4.31k in size. I did not see another way to save any dump either. Spent some time in the manuals and decided I give up.

Open up midi-ox, dump into it and saved. File size is 350k. It appeared to take each patch, song and pattern+ in parts, with the f7 at the end of each batch.

So my question now is, what software can I use to see what is in the sysex, edit it name wise or location, proper extension etc like the librarian?

The .xws files are for using with xg works sequencer. The AN200 may
work differently, but for the PLG150AN expert editor, there is a row
of icons immediately above the main AN editor screen. The 2 left
icons are to open and save AN files. PLG150AN saves to .ans file
only; I think an200 files
are .an2?

One other thing. After you do a midi dump to xg works lite, to save
it as an AN file you need to first open AN editor, then look
for "extract AN bulk dump data" icon in toolbar directly above the AN
editor. Click on icon, set end measure to length of file loaded into
works lite, click OK. This should load the file into the AN editor.
Now file can be saved in AN format. Same technique is used with
PLG150DX editor to load .mid files into DX
editor.

Good for you!

My old Mac has been sitting unused - I'm still on the fence on whether to part it out on
eBay or find another use for it. The G5 is so nice to use I can't find much work for the old
Mac. But by the time the G5 is paid off my wife will want a new laptop - it never ends...

I'll defer to somebody who actually uses an AN200 w/ the update on this question...

[AN1x] Re: xg works

Of course last night I missed the easiest way; you should be able to
do a bulk dump directly into AN editor. In the toolbar directly above
editor, there are also icons for "transmit AN bulk dump data"
and "recieve an1x bulk dump data". (The plg card in S80 saves to
smartmedia as .s2b file, so I've never done a bulk dump to editor). I
use XG works lite only as a launching pad for editors and to load
existing .mid
files...

.an2
yep you have to use the save icon in the editor. I was doing the save under file and made that famous (ass_u_me) it was the same. not. 307k worth of .an2. Just to test it, I renamed a pattern sent it in and checked it there.

Funny things happen... tempo goes off etc.
I re-init pattern in the user 124 area. The I re-open the file I saved. Did not sound the same. tempo off. Also AN200 displays err sometimes, so I hit the exit button on AN200, turn knob back. Ok load file, open pattern list. see my 124. play it, re-set tempo and double click it, it asks store I do. But when I play the An200 I hear a different pattern. Move knob forward or back one then back, it's there.

What a odd creature.

So I am thinking I got it saved now. A sysex dump in midi-ox of 350k and a .an2 305 k file.

I am going to set it aside now and try the save on the dx200 unit. Tomorrow I will do the factory re-set unless someone here tells me I do not have it backed up... then back to the drawing board again...

PLG150DX editor to load .mid files into DX
  editor.

Checked these, they fit the an1x. I don't think they fit the AN200...
going to have to look to see if one is or if I can mod a dx200 to
fit. Unless someone here has a full an200 info file...

The PLG150-AN = AN200 and the PLG150-AN is descendant from the AN1x. Considering
how remarkably backward compatible the voice structure is I don't think you will have
much difficulty adapting the PLG150-AN.ins to your AN200. I'm looking at it in TextEdit
right now and comparing it the Control Change Modes chart on page 9 of the AN1x Data
List, and it appears accurate to me.

then I would just have to rename the patches and other items...
you most likely are right...
At least I got the manual for it, tons of data in the back with the default names etc.
