Re: [ATARI-MIDI-ARCHIVES] Digest Number 370

Yes Daniel - the floppy disk that I have is only a setup.exe file that will setup the Christmas Hotz midi files only as long as you have the Hotz Trax 2, The Hotz Translator 2 Program , or the U Play Music Program on your computer. And I do enjoy playing with the U Play Music demo program on my Windows Me computer, but don't think $ 199 is that cost effective in my book, and unfortunately, the setup file will not setup on the computer with just a demo program. The U Play Music program allows you to play along with the program and using your keyboard that plays various notes from the given chord being played at the particular time. And thanks for your input David.

Come to think of it, Daniel, I would say you are right. The Hotts controller's output would be like a combination of one of those keyboards (where you hold down one key and it jams in C major; hold down the key next to it and it jams in C minor) - and Band-In-A-Box.

Expect much more musical, of course. But your point about it's output being a bit different each time is probably correct.

This may be part of the magic of why Steven is trying to re-create it.

After some study about this particular software I see it's really something special and it can give interesting results. Question is how to convert data. I don't think it's possible to do directly from the floppy disk, if I understand well it uses special codes for scales, chords etc., and some kind of interactivity. I doubt the format was somewhere published...

So maybe the only possibility would be to record MIDI output from Hotz software to the second sequencer in real time, and save or export it as MIDI file. At least one version (variation) of the music could be done this way - it's possible when played for the second time, music will be somehow different in some details.

And if I'm not wrong this software is still offered for 199 USD, let's suppose it's a version for newer Windows... It still should be compatible with older data files, or not?

Not really Daniel, because when I first had heard these particular midi files, some of these arrangements sounded particularly like some brass quintet arrangements I had played before and was interested in seeing how they were scored. Plus I really had enjoyed playing around with the Hotz Program on my computer. Steve Weber
