MidiPlexer (Hybrid Arts)

2004-11-14 by gregor_malecha

Can anyone help me in finding a MidiPlexer (Hybrid Arts) so that I
can expand the MIDI ports on my Atari STE, working with Hybrid Arts
SMPTE-Track ?

As I now begin to work with an Axon NGC77SB guitar synth, which uses
up to 16 MIDI channels for itself, the MidiPlexer would be the tool
to allow me the full integration into my existing MIDI recording
setup with Hybrid Arts SMPTE-Track (MIDI-Track) and the other synths
etc.

Or - does anyone know of an alternative way to accomplish this task ?

Help is appreciated,

Greg

Re: MidiPlexer (Hybrid Arts)

2004-11-15 by gregor_malecha

Hi Charles,

thanks for your input and the ebay link, I found what you meant, but
unfortunately that's not the MidiPlexer (multiplier of MIDI channels)
but the SmpteTrack sequencer software together with its SMPTE
timecode sync-box. That's what I'm using already for 17 years.

So I'm still searching for the MidiPlexer !

Any further suggestions are welcome.

Greg

(btw that auction ends 16-Nov-04 21:00:00 EST, 38 hours from now)

Is the MidiPlexer the same as the C-Lab Export?
Additional MIDI-Outports via the serial Port?
there are the schematics of it on the web so you
can build your own (I did it already).

Otherwise:
You can get a MidiPLexer from here for 25USD:

Ciao

Re: MidiPlexer (Hybrid Arts)

Hi Peter & everybody else,

Serial port = Modem Port (RS-232)?

The RS-232 port is already occupied by the SmpteTrack Sync Box.

(at the moment one of these Sync Boxes is displayed at
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?
ViewItem&rd=1&item=5137954765&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT )
(but mine looks much better)

Since I've never seen the MidiPlexer I don't know how it gets hooked
up but it must be leaving the RS-232 port free for the Sync Box.
(Or they made some sort of through-wiring. Maybe one of the other
Atarians here knows/uses this?)

The SmpteTrack Software is in any case designed to support the
MidiPLexer, about other MidiMultipliers - who knows.

I followed your link (midiguy.com) but I had come across that site
already before and had ignored it then since it states "Updated
7/1/03" and I saw that they have a newer page "12/7/03" where it's
not listed anymore. But anyway - now I wrote them an e-mail, who
knows...

But so far - still searching...

Thanks,
Greg

Hi

yes serial port usually mean modem port. It only gets
confusing on TT030, Mega STe (and clones) since they
have multiple serial ports.

What about your cartridge port? Is it used?
Otherwise you could the Steinberg Midex Plus that offers 4 midi
outs an 2 midi ins and also SMPTE...

http://www.shell.linux.se/adma/studio/midex.php

But I don' tknow if it is supported by every sequencer or only by cubase.
I have one but still haven't used it...

Re: MidiPlexer (Hybrid Arts)

2004-11-16 by gregor_malecha

Hi everybody & thanks for input

What I found out meanwhile is:

The MidiPlexer is using the HardDisk port with a through-
configuration.

Quoting http://
www.notator.org/cgi-bin/notator/getmessage.cgi?month=200109&msg=109 :

"On the rear is a cable marked DMA In and on the other end of this
cable is a 19 Pin male DMA plug. There is also a port marked DMA Out
which is a 19 pin female type connector."

(Reply to JAMES M. ALEXANDER: I'm using an STe not Mega STe, only 1
modem out)

(Reply to Peter Ullrich: midiguy.com replied - no more MidiPlexer
available.
Steinberg Midex+ doesn't look suitable without the supporting
Steinberg software. How should the ROM port know anything which is
adressed to the HardDisk port?)

So - still searching...

(I'll also post my initial message in the atari-midi group to reach
more Atarians)

Greg

Re: [atari-midi-archives] Re: MidiPlexer (Hybrid Arts)

2004-11-16 by jezzpowell@aol.com

simple answer - do what i have done - build a top-spec pentium 4 pc for \ufffd600, altho its probably cheaper in yank-land, and buy the wonderous device that i use, callled a USB MIDIMAN MIDISPORT 4X4 - this gives you 4 ins and 4 outs, my mate has the 8X8 one - man it costs \ufffd40 for the 4X4 (thats $72) which is bugger all for making all my synths attach and work ! by the way - the ACCESS VIRUS KC is the BEST synth i have EVER USED MAN !

I do still use my atari, but Logic on the PC is DON ! (it was notator on the atari)

l8z dudes !

Re: MidiPlexer (Hybrid Arts) - Found One - Thanks!

2004-11-19 by gregor_malecha

Hi guys,

finally I did find somebody selling a MidiPlexer! And that's after
all the easiest solution. (But let it first arrive...)

Thanks to you for going along with me with all your ideas and help.

Now to the last 3 mails that I hadn't answered yet:

To Bill: The idea of syncing 2 Ataris I liked, you had a good spark
with this one. I'm about to do this with Atari -> PC too.

To Peter Ullrich: Your last idea I'm not sure I understood rightly.
Wasn't what you suggested pretty similar to what I had doubted in my
remark quoted by you? I don't think the Steinberg driver would
understand SmpteTrack language, which addresses the HardDisk port.
Sure it would need experimenting to find out, or someone who knows
the inner workings of these two programs. But thank you for putting
your energy & ideas into it.

To jez: Once I have the spare £600 + whatever comes on top to make it
go round I might go for it. For now I go with £14 and the MidiPlexer,
that will do the job for the moment. And that's what I was looking
for in the first place.

Thanks again & bye,

Greg
