Sure you could get away with a gas stove heated soldering iron, but isn't a temperature controlled, fine tip iron a lot more professional and less painful? Would you consider spending money on tools of the trade unecessary? And, by the way, I hope you have progressed from the 90Sxxxx AVRs, the new ones have a lot more fuses to get wrong, as we hear daily on avrfreaks.net, and it is a lot easier to get wrong with non Studio based programming interfaces.
