The programming interface of those board do no follow standard pin-out IIRC so they try to suck people in by having to use their own programmers. Nothing bad to say about the hardware itself, they seem well built. I guess one could do some small mods to the hardware and then use standard tools like AVR Studio V4.18 (DON'T TOUCH Version 5 yet) with winAvr if one want to program in C otherwise the assembler that comes with Studio will do nicely.
