I was never actively involved but it was real fun see everyone discussing a lot of interesting problems,you are right mark regarding this but AVR community or forums everywhere have slowed down to my knowledge,With Avalanche of new microcontrollers and ARM cores at competitive lets see upto where the AVR survives(I shifted to MSP series a year back) and STM32 (for higher computing purpose).
Nevertheless I will always be in debt of ATMEGA32 and Atmega168 I learned everything from them(from programming to basic electronics stuff).

And Mark I really dont think AVR forums will stop(at least for next few years) albeit it is going to slow down.
