They lack many features of the JTAG ICE, but also lack the $300 price tag. The Olimex was the first, I think, but I would not recommend this. The design is very poor. So poor, in fact, that I have also designed a JTAG ICE clone, which I will soon be offering in production for about $40.00 US, shipping worldwide. For a preview, please see: http://www.ecrostech.com/Products/AvrJtagIce/Intro.htm Making your own JTAG ICE is a nice project. But, if you want a JTAG ICE to use to get work done, for heaven's sake buy one. By the time you've had a PCB made your own will cost you more. Also, as soon as something is not working, how do you know whether it's the target system or the JTAG ICE? I have designed my JTAG ICE very carefully to avoid any possible interference with the target system either through EMI or power supply coupling. It is also so small it requires no desk space and sits on the target system connector. Graham.
