I agree with Brian that the lock bits are the main security mechanism. So, how about another guess ... maybe if you're using the SPI pins for something else, you would worry that you'd accidentally trigger SPI and mess up the chip. By disabling SPI, you make this impossible and get to sleep better. Graham.
