If cost, as you say, is not a factor, you might try a SICK LADAR,
something like the LMS 291:

This is a wonderful sensor and can see the full 180 degrees in front
of it at 0.5 degree increments and gives ranges in millimeters or
centimeters. I'm using one now in a project - it is absolutely
superb.
