how about over-clocking the AVR
for me
i over-colck mega8535-8 to 24.5MHz 
my project was a digital filter 
i know it is not a good thing to do but in my case, it work just fine

note: at 30MHz the mega8535 dose not work

Or, use two - parallel processing. 8-)
