I am using the Omnivision OV7640AA for Black&White VGA res
images, and am quite happy.  Mostly with slow frame-rates, but the
USB 2.0 Cypress connection can handle full speed.
Not much direct use of AVR, though.  I do use a Tiny 26 to control
the laser diode lighting.
