I solved it by performing a "Manual Firmware Update" of the
AVRISP, following the procedure described in the AVRStudio online-help
after uninstalling V4.11 and reinstalling the previous version of
AVRStudio:
ATMEL AVR Tools On-Line Help -> AVRISP User's Guide -> Getting
Started ->
Manual Firmware Upgrade.

I eventually managed it by skipping a step in the procedure that was 
failing. It then reprogrammed itself without any problems - weird!
