If you take a look at the derivation of the word "amateur", you will see
"From Latin amator, lover, from amatus, pp. of amare, to love". In other
words, we participate in the hobby because we love it.

Some of the topnotch EE's in the world are also radio amateurs. I know
some engineering companies look on EE's who are also hams as a curse and
some see them as a blessing. I myself can't see what is wrong with
someone who loves the subject of his work so much that he spends most of
his own spare time at it too.
