I have been using the USB-to-serial converter from Prolific Technology for many months now using PC and Laptop + STK500 and with good performance.
The only thing now very ideal is that the device sometimes displays strange characters on hyperterminal but can be solved by unplugging and then plugging back the device. but this does not occer often, say once in 2 months or so

It's primarily used with an ISP module, but it also works well with the
STK500 I have.
If you don't want to go that route, I also have an EasyAVR development
board from Mikroelectronika. The board is quite nice but the
documentation sucks and once they get your money they don't seem to want
to even answer an inquiry about it. So if you want to go that route it
might be worth while, too. I like the fact that I can test all the I/O
with it and for that one reason it's worth the aggravation, at least to me.
