A quick and easy way to try out FORTH on the AVR is to check out
PFAVR:

You'll need at least 32K of RAM so you'll need an AVR that supports
external memory. I've tested this on my MAVRIC-IB board which
includes the RAM on board as well as my MAVRIC-IIB board w/memory
expansion installed and both work just fine:

PFAVR is free so you can try it out without spending a lot of money.
Also, you'll find pre-built firmware on the PFAVR web site above, so
you don't have to build it first, which can be a little tricky.
