Just blew up my AVRISP the other day.. The 90S8535
located on it flipped its lid literally...

The damage occured when i kept the target AVR board
on a metallic tweezer which probably
shorted the 5V pin of the AVRISP header to the
24 Volt DC Power supplied from the lithium
batteries!!
