AVR-Chat

I have a collection of 3 AVRISP's in various states of failure. All got
this way when AVR Studio asked to update the firmware and was allowed
to. Not sure if I've ever seen it succeed.

Yesterday one had 2.04 and AVR Studio wanted to put 2.07 in it. Failed.

Then the manual procedure failed many times as well.

Somehow it worked this morning. I can't figure out what I did "right"
that I can get the other 2 working again.

Have tried powering the AVRISP directly off 3.3 and 5.0 regulated power
so as to ensure none of the other ISP connector pins were wiggling.

Tried variations on when I short the two holes and when I release. If I
have the "AVR Prog..." window open and the Program button is grayed,
short the holes and a moment later the Program button is enabled. Have
tried programming with the holes shorted. No change. Altho that might be
how one of my AVRISPs got to its "totally trashed" condition.

Usually I can short the two holes on the AVRISP and the "AVR Prog..."
tool accepts what is connected and I can attempt to write new firmware.
But not at the moment. Relaunch of AVR Studio 4.12 build 468 doesn't seem
to help. Reboot of computer doesn't seem to help. WinXP.

When "AVR Prog..." likes what it sees on the end of the serial cable the
problem is "address: 0x0000, Expected: 0xcf3f, Found: 0xffff"

Sat at a different computer with a version 4.11 of AVR Studio and got
pretty much the same. Altho that computer will launch "AVR Prog..."
while my usual computer with the latest won't at the moment.

I see a 6 pin ISP header on the AVRISP. Presumably this will let me use
a good AVRISP to write code in a problem AVRISP?

What is it that I'm missing? Makes me long for good old Freescale and
P&E tools.
