I assumed he was trying to change 0/5v to RS232 levels and the MAX232 does this very well.

Haven't been paying great attention to this this thread. The MAX232 is a
fun and widely available inexpensive part but if +-12 volts is essential
one is not going to get there from here. +-9 or +-10, but not 12 with the
MAX232.
