hi does anybody knows an IC (non programmble) that changes voltage level from 0&5v to -12 & 12v respectively just toss the ic number thanks alot --------------------------------- Need a quick answer? I would go for the MAX232 too.
I have used it in dozens of projects and found it to be very reliable.

You will find these under "Interface circuits" at Maxim, Linear technology, Intersil and other. One member of the family usually has the number "232" as in MAX232. I assumed he was trying to change 0/5v to RS232 levels and the MAX232 does this very well.

Haven't been paying great attention to this this thread. The MAX232 is a
fun and widely available inexpensive part but if +-12 volts is essential
one is not going to get there from here. +-9 or +-10, but not 12 with the
MAX232.

Not clear - are you looking for a dc-dc power converter, or a level converter to interface (say) a 5v chip to a 3.3v? If the former, what power level and efficiency are you willing to pay for? There are some really nifty led drivers in the $2 and under range. If the latter, most of the analog interface companies have a couple of lines. I like Maxim's parametric search, but TI, Linear, and probably Analog Devices make them. I think I search on "voltage level conversion ic" or "ttl conversion ic". He obviously means 5v logic to RS232.
MAX232 is a great chip I have used loads of times.
