Can you got to Tools>Program Avr>Connect and then select the STK500. Have you ever gone this far with the STK?? If you can then first select the chip you are using from the drop down menu and also select ISP mode for programming. Then go to the Board tab, you should now see the VTG, AREF etc. Also the ISP frequency should be there, set it at 250KHz (or close) and then WRITE it. If all is well you should then be able to go to the Advanced tab and read the signature byte. Let's start with that for now.
