FWIW, I haven't had any issues with using Firefox to download AVR
Studio on either Win2K or WinXP Pro platforms.

If your issue is with installing AVR Studio, perhaps some error
occurred causing your AVR Studio installation file to become corrupt.
Perhaps downloading the installer again and rerunning it will help
resolve your issue.

I had the same problem. It turned out that I needed a newer version
of MS Installer (now called Windows Installer), available for
downloading on the Microsoft site.

I downloaded the latest build of AVR Studio, and it will NOT install.
After about 5-10 seconds, saing "Astudio4b528 has generated errors, and
will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An
error log is being created."

I am unable to find any such log file, however. I have used the Search
for Files feature, and searched for all log files. None seem ot match
this occurance, based on date/time. Anyone with any ideas?

Quite a few people have had problems with this when they
use something other than IE for download, such as firefox,
for some reason.

It usually work with IE.

That sucketh. I will *NOT* use IE for anything, period. I'll get a
linux box going and use AVRDUDE first.

It was supposed to have been fixed last week..you can always get
someone else to download it for you and put it on a CD. :-)

Is the chip on the STK500? If so the worst thing you may need to
do is a HVPP, but you should be able to resurrect it without problems.

Yeah, I was pretty certain it can be recovered from, but I have no
idea what I have to change on the chip to get it runing, at this point.
I'd liek to takeit back to where it was when it arrived from Atmel,
withthe sample program in place.

Start reading the STK500 docs about High Voltage Parallel Programming
then :-)

Maybe be it is just the case the you have switched the fuse for
EXTERNAL CLOCK and all you need to do is to activate the clock
circuit of the STK500. How were you running the chip before?
Internal 1MHz clock?

I've never had that problem John, but I use Netscape. The only problem
I've had was anal retinitis...like the day I tried to do an update on an
ISP while it was plugged into the target system rather than just power
and return, at 0200 or so...on the day I was supposed to do a dog and
pony show...and it was my only ISP on hand.

RTFBC or RTFMC...in other words, read the instructions first...is what I
say these days.

I don't know for certain. I was running it as the shipped sample
device with the shipped sample program (LEDs & Switches). I was
unable to read many of the registers on the device without receiving
error messages from AVRStudio, suggesting themy ISP vs STK frequencies
were incorrect, but so far as I coudl tell they were not. It also
referred to the AVRStudio Help, which brings up exactly nothing. The
Help simply is not functioning. )-:

Can you got to Tools>Program Avr>Connect and then select the STK500.

Have you ever gone this far with the STK??

If you can then first select the chip you are using from the drop down
menu and also select ISP mode for programming.

Then go to the Board tab, you should now see the VTG, AREF etc.
Also the ISP frequency should be there, set it at 250KHz (or close)
and then WRITE it. If all is well you should then be able to go to
the Advanced tab and read the signature byte.

Let's start with that for now.

I swapped out the 8515 for thr ATmega16L that shipped with the
STK-500. I plugged it into socket 3100A3, per the User Guide. I try
to program it with the switches&leds code, but I am still getting that
damnable box xomplaining about possible clock speed problems. It also
recommends reading help, but I don't seem to HAVE help. )-: I am
re-downloading AVRStuio 4.12, going to reinstall it and see if that
helps some
