I second John's recommendation of the documentation available at http://www.modbus.org/ Presumably if you have a requirement for modbus then you have something else capable of speaking modbus to talk to your device. I didn't have such a device but found a PC application out of England that allowed me to originate modbus commands and verify my understanding of the spec.
