Several years ago I did an ASCII modbus on AVR. I second John's  
recommendation of the documentation available at http://www.modbus.org/

Presumably if you have a requirement for modbus then you have  
something else capable of speaking modbus to talk to your device. I  
didn't have such a device but found a PC application out of England  
that allowed me to originate modbus commands and verify my  
understanding of the spec.

The reason modbus is used so much is that it is well documented, and  
its simple.
