Dixit,

If you are looking for commercial reasons, check out:

http://www.sunlux-india.com/MODBUSProtocolSuite.htm

It seems to be a decent set of libraries available in all kinds of
formats.

If you are looking for academic reasons, I would strongly recommend
you start by reading the Modbus specifications, at www.modbus.org.
This would and some thought would provide an awesome learning experience.

(If you are doing this commercially, but still have time, I would also
recommend perusing the modbus website for the educational value.)

Several years ago I did an ASCII modbus on AVR. I second John's
recommendation of the documentation available at http://www.modbus.org/

Presumably if you have a requirement for modbus then you have
something else capable of speaking modbus to talk to your device. I
didn't have such a device but found a PC application out of England
that allowed me to originate modbus commands and verify my
understanding of the spec.

The reason modbus is used so much is that it is well documented, and
its simple.
