Best way to get reacquainted with AVR micro controllers

Best way to get reacquainted with AVR micro controllers

2014-11-08 by doug@whiteapple.u-net.com

Hope some kind souls can give some general advice.

I used the AT90S8535 some time ago to provide a few units for automating several bits of equipment used in a laboratory. The chips were mounted on a proprietary board (ABC Maxi board) and programmed in C and were very much just a way of getting certain things done.

Now I have more time and would like to pursue using micro controllers in greater depth I find that time has moved on and there are new AVR chips (Mega etc).

Can any one point me in the direction of a good source for something along the lines of the old development board but using the more recent chips and any good books/documentation for the newer chips.

I note the Arduino boards, but would prefer something without having an OS system using up memory.

I do have a STK500 and general facilities like power supplies, analogue scope etc.

Thanks for any help on this.

Doug.

The Arduino has no operating system. Its code does tend to be a bit larger than a straight hand-crafted C but it is not serious. You can also use it without the Arduino development system through the bootloader. Its probably the best there is right now, largely because of the huge number of shields.

The new Mega1284p will plug into the same socket of
the STK500 (PDIP type) or solder onto a board which
used the 90S8535 or Mega8535.

For learning or refreshing your memory purposes it's
as quick and cheap as you can get seeing that you already
have "stuff".

Thanks gentlemen, your comments appreciated.
I realise now that the Arduino has a bootloader rather than an OS.
I have used CodevisionAVR in the past and notice that the latest version even has an option for uploading to Arduino boards.
