I'm a newcomer to this device and have been there and
got started OK. A good intro seems to be a PC parallel
plug to ISP interface. You can do this direct but it
is preferable to add a buffer as this gives a little
protection to PC and supposedly increases acceptable
line lenght. (For best protection buy a cheap PC
parallel card that can be replaced if you burn it.)
This is 'serial' programming as it does the AVR
bit-by-bit, parallel programming is more complex.

This approach allows programming of many AVR devices
from the humble 2313 upwards so it's not holding you
to a specific device. It's also compatible with
Atmel's and others programming software/IDE.

I bought a cable for 11GBP with a SMT driver in the
parallel hood as I decided the parts would cost me
nearly that. The header can then just go into pins on
breadboard.
