AVR-Chat

Wow, the members here are SO helpful.  Especially being patient with a 
newbie like me.

Well, the next problem is getting my LCD working.  It is a brand new 
optrex dmc-61230.  I have it hooked up for 4 bit parallel.

I have it all wired up and all the wires are going to where I think 
they should, but it is not working.   I have triple checked the wires 
while looking at the datasheet for the LCD.  Power wires are right.  
The 4 active data pins (DB4 thru DB7) are hooked to the pins I have 
assigned to bits 0-4.  RS, RW, E are hooked up aproperly as far as I 
can tell.  But I get nothing.

When you power up an LCD should it do anything visible without any 
connection other than power (+,-) and the "LCD drive" which is 
supposed to be in the neighborhood of 1/2 VDD?

I am getting nothing.  The backlight does come on....

No lettering or anything.  As far as I can tell, the test program 
looks like it is running properly, but I am not positive.

I am devoid of further ideas....

LCD displays generally don't display anything 
useful on powerup, but you should be able to vary 
the contrast voltage, and get black squares.
If you can't get that, then even if you are 
talking to it right, you may never know it.

Other than that, it's TIMING, TIMING, TIMING.
Do ALL the init steps, and insure that all your delays meet spec plus a bit.
You can always trim the delays back to spec+1 after you get it talking.

It can be tedious, since you don't usually get 
anything viewable until you get all of it right.

I can sympathize, I just went through this with a 
small 16 bit color LCD on another project, with a 
VERY long init sequence, where the parts that 
were correct, were poorly documented. :)

I think I nuked him while you were typing this.

To quickly check hardware, I often use the BASCOM-AVR BASIC compiler
environment.

It has GUI menu's to very easily configure it to drive LCD's wired to any
pins and then print a message to the LCD to check you have it working.

The top line of 2-line displays, the only line of one line displays, 
and the 1st and 3rd of 4 line displays, is usually dark or grey fresh 
out of powerup and before the controller is initialized.

But maybe he is not so far off the mark.  WHile it was not a stupid 
question.... Maybe I am stupid.  I had taken the generic LCD.h file 
and saved it as lcd.h.bak.  I then edited the H file and then 
created the hex file.  unfortunately I edited the bak file, not the 
H file. So, of course the pin assignemnts I made were not actually 
represented in the hex file... Would not work.  Now it does.

Hi Tony,

Besides all the other good advice you've already gotten (the one jerk 
notwithstanding) you might want to study the manual for the HD44780.  I 
believe that's the chip used in the Optrex LCD's.

The data sheet for the 44780 is a bit hard to come by but I have it on my 
website at http://www.qsl.net/w9sz/files/PDFs.

Yes, the data sheet IS hard to find.  Thanks for the source.

I eventually figured out what I was doing wrong.  I had 2 versions 
of the include file and I modified the wrong one with the new pin 
assignments for the LCD!!!!  DUMB DUMB.  But it was right there in 
the PN window.  But it was bot the one make was using!

So obvious but so hard to see!

Thanls for the feedback.  I have the datasheet for the display.  It 
suggests a pot of 10k or 20k.  I used a simple voltage divider with 
2 10k resistors.  After experimentation, I found that the optimal 
voltage divider delivers  pure GROUND to the contrast pin.  So that 
is how I have it set now.

In the end, I had the physical wiring correct, but despint making 
corrections to the include file, I corrected the WRONG file.  So, 
the s/w was trying to use the wrong pins!
