New LCD will not work.

Wow, the members here are SO helpful. Especially being patient with a newbie like me. Well, the next problem is getting my LCD working. It is a brand new optrex dmc-61230. I have it hooked up for 4 bit parallel. I have it all wired up and all the wires are going to where I think they should, but it is not working. I have triple checked the wires while looking at the datasheet for the LCD. Power wires are right. The 4 active data pins (DB4 thru DB7) are hooked to the pins I have assigned to bits 0-4. RS, RW, E are hooked up aproperly as far as I can tell. But I get nothing. When you power up an LCD should it do anything visible without any connection other than power (+,-) and the "LCD drive" which is supposed to be in the neighborhood of 1/2 VDD? I am getting nothing. The backlight does come on.... No lettering or anything. As far as I can tell, the test program looks like it is running properly, but I am not positive. I am devoid of further ideas.... -Tony
