Freebsd pcb and schematic tools

Freebsd pcb and schematic tools

2004-03-03 by Kathy Quinlan

Hi all,

I wish to switch to FreeBSD (windows gives me the shits) and I need some
good tools, what do you recommend, considering I do a lot of SMD and 4
layer PCB's it needs to be a good tool. I currently use Protel99SE and
it does not run under wine. I do not really want to install XP in Vmware
just to be able to run Protel, and prepared to shelve Protel, if I can
find a good cad package to replace it.

Regards,

Kat.

Had a look at the ports collection ?
http://www.freebsd.org/ports/cad.html

there is a version of eagle on the ports list

Windows has always been a diarrhoetic. :-)

Why don't you download the free version of Cadsoft Eagle
(http://www.cadsoft.de/) for Linux and see if it'll play under
FreeBSD?

If it works, then you can licence a "professional" version of Eagle
and fly with that.

If it doesn't work, you may have to "slum it" with Linux instead.
:-)

Yeap there is a port for FreeBSD, I am just not sure how "professional"
Eagle is ?

While we're on this topic...
Does anyone know if OrCad Capture/Layout comes in a Linux/Unix flavour ?
I am quite used to it and would like to migrate away from Windoze too.
Tnx.

I don't think so , but their upscale product will. If you can afford
it...

I have used Eagle for the last 5 -6 years. While it has a few quirks I have
designed over 120 PCB's with it. The autorouter is not the best (it leaves
a lot of funky shaped traces) but like all routers you have to help them out
by doing some hand routing and tweaking when it is complete.

It may lack some features right out of the box but if you go to the download
section you will probably find it in the users area. The great thing about
eagle was the ability to add whatever feature you needed via the ULP (User
Language Programming) capability. DXF out/in was implemented this way.

The technical support has always been good and it has a rather significant
community of users that also provide some great support as well.

I would recommend Eagle to anyone that is hobby level all the way up to semi
complex designs (I call a semi-complex design anything with 6 layers and
components on both sides).

Good Luck.

Thanks,
Dave Miller
