Kenwood KT-6040 XS8 protocol

Kenwood KT-6040 XS8 protocol

2006-10-29 by Doug Locke

Having aquired a Kenwood KT-6040 tuner recently I am looking for any
information on the XS interface option included on the rear of the
tuner especially interfacing to an AVR.
Having tried reasonably unsuccessfully to find anything via Google I
wonder if anyone here has used this interface to control the tuner or
could at least point me in the right direction.
Thanks.
Doug Locke.

Try www.mods.dk

You may have to "register" but they have a lot of
instruction manuals online. Have you looked on the Kenwood
website?

Thanks for the info Frank and Jim, will have a ferret through and see if I
can find something relevant. It seems strange that an interface present on
something as ubiquitous as Kenwood gear is so little generally known.

Cheers.
Doug.

If your talking about the CD changer interface (I don't know how it is
called in Kenwood-language), then the Mictronics page should be a good
starting point for you:

Thanks for all the help so far, the unit is a HI-Fi separate tuner and has
two green plastic sockets on the rear labelled as XS.
The XS interface was to enable Kenwood hi-fi units to be controlled by a
"master" unit as far as I can judge and used an 8 bit serial protocol with
just a two wire connection. The interface on the cd changer is considerably
later/more sophisticated than this.
A very helpful person called Guido has given me some info and in the dim
past he used a PIC to implement this but cannot remember details.
As I cannot find a remote for the tuner It seemed like a neat dea to use an
AVR to translate infra red codes to XS codes to control the unit, never
anticipated the difficulty in finding out the details.

Thanks to all.
Doug.

Sorry, somehow my first association with Kenwood was car-hifi. I should
have had a closer look before posting...

Kenwood is one of the "Big Three" (Kenwood, Yaesu, Icom) who manufacture
amateur radio equipment. I have some of it sitting right here in front of
me!
