OK....  I feel a real plonker.....
   
  I need to do this using a Null-Modem cable.
   
  I switched Rx and Tx on the Micro sided of the MAX232... but didn't think "Hey David.... they need to be switched on the PC-interface side of the MAX232."...
   
  I'll get a nullmodem cable.... or modify this one.  I'll let you know how it goes.  Thanks for the help!  Especially John!  I learned a lot from you.
   
  I bought an AVR butterfly about a month ago.... and now I am hooked.
