Boss VF-1 Effect Processor

Hi,
I'm willing to buy a Boss VF-1, but I want ask some questions!
There isn't any effects loop on the VF-1 and I'm willing to use 
external analog distortions and compressors. How can I connet them or 
does any one using external stomp boxes with VF-1 ? How? Can we 
configure the place of the external pedals?
Lastly, I want to buy a foot controller for VF-1 and budget is 
limited. Which Fc do you recommend?
Is the FCB 1010 has serious disadvantages ? Maybe I would not use 
patch editing onlive situations !
