master setup for a multitimbral keyboard

Hallo everybody and happy new year! I gave myself a present last week and bought a second hand Boss VF-1 that now I want to use with my Roland JV-90. It's a '93 multitimbral keyboard that has only chorus and reverb inside, so I'd like to add some other effects to improve the sound. When I play I have for each song a set of different sounds on the keyboard and the difficulty is to balance the effects to fit all sounds in each performance. I find very useful to start with some master presets expecially those with compressor that I call automatically via midi, a preset for each performance. On purpose I have a question about setting THRESHOLD in the compressor, the given values are 0-100 that I suppose they are not decibel. Which value corresponds to 6 dB or 10 db? Any other good hints are welcome to set a master effect good to magnify and sharper different sounds in the meantime, expecially organs, strings, brasses and guitars. Franco
