Boss VF-1 Effect Processor

Can I program my midi knob box to send the VF-1 real-time sysex, 
thereby side-stepping the 4 MIDI CC modulator limitation?

Anything is controllable  through sysex in realtime. See the 
SoundDiver adaption in the Files Section.
(Full midi implementation is there as well.)

I'm sorry, that's not true, sysex messages are shared between different algorythms and it's a nightmare to sort everything out.

That's right, but for a given algorithm one has full controll. But 
same sysexs are used in different algortithms for different things. 
Switching on the chorus can be switching on the compressor in other 
algorithms.:)
