VZ10M screen

VZ10M screen

2010-08-25 by Chris Poacher

Hi there,

I'm the proud owner of a VZ-10M but have a screen problem, basically it was fine and in between the time I bought it and rackmounted it, this happened [see pic]. It wasnt hit or damaged by anything, just simply sat on a chair so I'm mystifed. Any suggestions or do I need a completely new screen, or maybe just a loose connection or something, though I doubt it. It;s still usable, as long as it doesnt spread northward.

Many thanks, keep up the good work and nice VZ sounds.

Chris

Dear Chris,

I am having to replace the backlight in my VZ-10 which I just bought on ebay. I have ordered but not received it yet; it costs 30€ including postage from info@... who are in Germany.
What I have read in their instructions and also at telesisgear.com, a US based outfit, is that if there is text on the screen then the screen is ok and only the backlight needs replacing. But in your picture the blue backlighting seems OK.
However there seems to be text missing, in the rainbow shaped incursion at the bottom of your screen. This may mean that a problem is developing elsewhere in the circuit. I have the VZ-1 workshop manual if it may help but not the VZ-1, although they are supposedly almost identical.
You may also consider editing with MidiQuest or another programme as a stop measure. I am myself in the middle of learning just that and it beats using the VZ-10M panel controls although the VZ-10M is not capable of dumping complete soundbanks through sysex without some action on the VZ-10M. So the screen is still needed for Menu3 ops.

cheers, Alan

PS Enjoyed your youtube, also a good test fotr my speakers!

The Service manual of the VZ-1 can be loaded from here:
http://www.deepsonic.ch/deep/manuals/casio_vz-1_service_manual.pdf

Maybe the display is the same. But I found no part number in there but
Some details how the LCD is controlled via a GAL.

In the VZ-1 it's a 64x96 pixel display - see page 19.

Ciao
Peter

Thanks for your help guys, I guessed the screen was totalled, just thought I'd ask for advice in case it was something simple like a connector gone sour. So strange how in the space of it sitting on a chair in the studio [on a cushion no less] for a week it went from perfect to trashed without me even switching it on, damaging it or even moving it. sigh.

However it is still usable to select patches etc and yes I do use sounddiver to program it so it's not a total loss, just need a bit of hit and miss to go into menu3 to perform a sound dump via midi as I cant see the confirm yes option.

Cheers,

Chris Poacher

The VZ10M's LCD is notorious for dying. It will eventually happen to everyone except the few people who happen to live in ideal atmospheric conditions. That's why I made sure to buy a NOS VZ10M.
