thanks looking
is all thats required if the backlight is "spotty" is a new elpanel ?

when is a invertor needed?

Inverter is necessary for EL foil, so it is there somewhere inside the  
machine - near the PSU or near the display, you can see two wires  
going to the display for backlight.

Just change EL panel carefully (because sometimes the old one is  
little bit glued inside, use long thin knife or cutter carefully, but  
never tried to open display as you will misallign contacts), solder  
new one (shortly! not to burn laminate), that's all. If wires for the  
backlight are soldered in the same place as pins from EL foil, don't  
forget to solder them, too. And when you try to switch on the  
instrument for checking, better don't touch these contacts, there's  
high voltage.
