VZ-10m SyseEx Load At My Wit's End

VZ-10m SyseEx Load At My Wit's End

I have worked with a lot of synths over the years, but I have to admit I have never had this much trouble trying to load data via sysex. There is a lot of good info out there, mostly on this forum and I have tried Soundiver, MidiOX and Bome SendSX with every variation I can think of for every setting in each of these apps.

Tonight, I was able to successfully send the internal data from the VZ to Bome and then save it as a sysex file, which is great, but I can't get data to load into the VZ.

With Soundiver, I can't even connect. With MidiOX, I can sort of connect, and with Bome saving data works but I get the same MIDI ERROR RECEIVE ERROR when I try to load and used different VZ sysex files varying from 46 to 55 KB in size and tried changing from voice to opmem to both as I know the above error happens when you try to load the wrong type of file for what the VZ is set to receive. I wish I knew more about what size file is what type of file, but I am guessing the larger files have both voice and opmem data.

Is it possible I need an older USB/MIDI interface than my M-Audio M-track, such as an old Roland UM-1? I'm definitely running out of ideas. I've tried everything in the SomeVZsysexSettings doc and it was great info - I didn't really expect to still be unable to load banks into the synth. Thanks for any idea you have. I am perplexed at this point.

Just posting a follow-up in case it helps someone else out there. I bought a new old stock Edirol UM-1 MIDI Interface off of eBay and although I spent a number of hours trying to get the Win 7 64 bit driver to install on my Pavilion laptop, I was finally successful and once I had that online I was downloading banks into the VZ using Bome in a couple of minutes. So it appears there was something about the MIDI drivers or hardware in the M-Audio that did not play well with a really old MIDI device such as the VZ. Anyway, my next effort will be to try using an editor/librarian with it again using the UM-1 MIDI interface, but I already got the main thing I wanted working solved.

Glad to hear you solved the issue, and thanks for sharing how you solved it. I'd be interested in reading about results with VZ editors. I know I test drove an old atari editor with steem as well as a recent on-line editor. Always interested in other options i case I want to get back into VZ patch development; was always fond of the wild results possible.

Well, I was on a roll so I tried Soundiver 3.0.5 again and that was a bit of a learning experience as well. I couldn't get the loopback test to work and it didn't work to have Soundiver poll the VZ, but I tried following the advice on the message I saw in Soundiver to do a manual dump from the VZ and that did the trick. That way, all the setup info gets sent to Soundiver so it can display it and then changes are sent back to the VZ when you make adjustments in Soundiver. It appears to be working okay, although since the data has to be manually dumped I believe if you changed anything from the VZ front panel you'd have to do another dump to update Soundiver. This will still be a lot easier than accessing the 8 modules from the front panel, though.

Thanks for the update. With other gear, I have heard of issues with Sounddiver, so its good that you successfully navigated the steep curve!
