CZ-230S Programming

2005-10-04 by Stuart Bloom

Hi,
I've resurrected my CZ-230S that my wife got me for
Christmas in 1985. I had to take it apart, fix the
pitch bend wheel encoder, repair a key, and clean up
the mess from a leaky "D" cell, but it now works
great. I also added a protection diode to the power
jack.

I'm currently using the keyboard as a practice
instrument for a "low chimes" sound with a symphony I
play with. I'm timpanist and percussionist with the
Santa Fe Community Orchestra. We are playing an odd
piece by Hector Berlioz called Symphony Fantastique.
The last movement, where the subject of the symphony
is witnessing a "witches sabath" has low church chimes
ringing in the distance. I'm using the CZ-230S patch
#60 (bells) in a low octave. The sound is good, but
I want to experiment with the synth's sound generator.
It has no built-in editing capabilities like the
CZ-101.

Ever since I've had the synth, I've wanted to get
access to the synth's engine, but I could never afford
the early C-64, Apple, or IBM software.

Now I'd like to try again.

I still have my original manuals, and the MIDI command
list for the synth.

Will any of the generic "CZ" editors work with my
230S? Is there one of them that works specifically
with the CZ-230S?

I still have an early DOS machine, and a functional
C-64. I've also considered picking up a used CZ-101.
They appear to still be reasonable on ebay.

Other music: I'm a big, big fan of Emerson Lake and
Palmer, Wendy/Walter Carlos, Rick Wakeman, the Who,
and other groups that featured early synths. How
about "The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman". Great
early album.

Another thought about the CZ-230S. The default patch
00. The synth brass sounds alot like the brass in
Emerson Lake and Powell's "Touch and Go". What do you
think?

One last thing. I've built and I'm teaching myself
how to play the Theremin (a "real" one, not the toys
off ebay). Robert Moog built theremin kits in the
50's, giving himself early synthesizer experience
before he built his big ones. I was sad to hear that
he passed away last month.

Stu
