Yes - that's exactly how it worked. Each key doubled as a sound selector, and there was a select/play switch. Percussive sounds (piano, guitar, koto, banjo etc) were selected by white keys while sustained sounds (organ, accordion, viola, horn etc) were chosen by pressing the black keys. A simple system that worked well, especially since you could also assign any four sounds to push-buttons for instant recall. But when it went wrong, it would play scrambled sounds (mixing the attack and sustain/decay tones differently) in play mode.
