Re: [CZsynth] Omron Relays For Casio CZ-1

2013-06-11 by Paul Krull

Relays are found in many organs and synths and act as a buffer or mute on power up and down so you don't get big audio spikes or thumps that can damage gear. Relays have a limited life span so like batteries they will need to be replaced. Unfortunately, the gear will still continue to work but the audio will be compromised in a variety of ways: big noise floor; low output; erratic or distorted output and it will sound bad until the relay is replaced or bypassed. In the case of my CZ-1 it's fully functional but has a weak output and a big noise floor and just doesn't sound very good which I can clearly hear since it's sitting next to a CZ-5000 which is loud, punchy and sizzling although a little noisy at the moment with the ADC offset or whatever it is out of adjustment. I watched an organ tech install a new relay in my Lowrey C500 and he explained the purpose and design and the results afterwards were very pronounced. There was a huge boost in volume
and clarity and frequency response. I've already ordered a couple Omron G5V-2-DC5s so I'll be replacing mine like all the failed batteries I'm coming across lately. You can just bypass the circuit and live with the thumps and noises but in some cases that's not a good idea.

So excuse my ignorance but would you please educate me on the function of this particular relay. What does it do in the cz and why are you replacing it?. Is this something I need to look into in the future as well?
I appreciate your time.
