Re: Display

The screen itself is a 64x96 dot matrix display, driven from custom casio LSI chips. I cannot find any datasheet for the HD chips, they seem to be a custom order from hitachi as there are similar numbered lcd drivers from them. The GAL PD65012 is still available as NOS (new old stock). It is a type of programmable logic device (PLD) from NEC. What I dont know is whether you can extract the programmed logic from a GAL in a working casio synth, or whether you need some kind of source code. It is likely you need some pecialist programming machine or software package too. But to be honest the answer doesnt really matter if we cant get hold of the hitachi chips.
So the driver parts are exclusive to casio, so we cant just find a replacement part and swap them. I myself had planned to attempt to find a 64x96 screen and try replacing just that part, but I struggled with that too - just couldnt find a new one of the right size. With some research (cant find the links right now) I discovered that some casio calculators have the same screen, so if you can find the same info you may be able to rip one out of the right calculator and replace it.
Like I said, my screen is not completely dead, although I thought it was. I took my vz10 apart and cleaned up the insides. There was some issue with how the screen board connected to the main board, with some gentle fiddling I got most of the lines of my screen back. Its far from perfect, but it is at least now usable. Perhaps you will find the same. Post back if you get any results as I am sure there will be others who have dead screen problems at some point. Good luck!
